THE FLOWER GIRL

from A Dearth of Prose

the flower-girl swings
an undersigned May
where rheumatoid hands
push memory away.
Let bliss, only name
of a nine year old child
entangle the adult heart
overgrown wild.
Where croak of the swing
meets infantine gale
of babble and laugh
and timber and nail,
the mother is rapt
as child in tree
and she laughs,
and feels again three.
