IT WAS NOT SILENT NIGHT

from An Apogee

they laid him in a two-foot box
right where the angels said
and gave the torment of the birth
to Beelzebub instead.

and sages joined the jitterbug,
austerity forgot;
somnambulists were wide awake
within the herding plot;

and not a scribe by Peter’s gate
could muster pen to write,
but thundered in their new employ:
it was not Silent Night.
